Mentor Match FAQs

AHRA Mentor Program FAQs

What is the AHRA Mentor Program?

The AHRA Mentor Program is the latest addition to an expanding line-up of services to support members’ professional development needs.

Is there a fee associated with using the AHRA Mentor Program?

It is a benefit of AHRA Membership and is available only to members. There is no extra charge to use this resource.

How are Mentors and Mentees matched?

Members must first enroll as a mentor, mentee or both. During the enrollment process, members will select preferences for various demographics, experience and interests to establish their personal criteria.
Once enrolled, a staff member will facilitate a match based on the submission. We will make every effort to ensure a successful match.

Once matched, our staff will facilitate an introduction to both the mentee and the mentor. Participants are expected to connect with each other to develop their mentoring relationship. Our staff will check in periodically during the match to ensure the match is successful.

FOR MENTORS

How do I become a Mentor?

If you are a member, click here to enroll as a mentor. You will be instructed to choose your preferences for various demographics and also to complete your member profile.

Who are the Mentees?

Mentees are other members who need you to help support their careers and leadership success.

Can I have more than one Mentee?

While there is no limit to the number of mentoring relationships you can establish, we recommend that you be judicious in selecting only mentees who are most suited to learn from your expertise and experience. Our staff will confirm all matches with you before facilitating an introduction. You can decline a new match at any time.

How will I know if a Mentee has selected me as their Mentor?

You will receive an e-mail from our staff with a new mentorship request. You will be prompted to accept or reject the request.

Is it okay to reject a request?

Yes, but there should be a good reason to do so. We encourage you to at least have an initial conversation to explore whether the relationship would be mutually fulfilling.

How do I end a mentoring relationship?

If the mentoring relationship is complete, simply notify us at

If the mentoring relationship isn't working out, please notify us so that we can rematch participants.

What are the expectations for participating Mentors?

We expect that you will fulfill your commitment to develop at least one mentoring relationship per year. We expect you to respond to initial requests for matches in a timely manner, and that you communicate with your mentees as agreed upon by both you and your mentee.  It will be important to discuss your mutual expectations at the very first meeting.

How much time will I need to invest as a Mentor?

We recommend that you and your mentee agree on a schedule that works best for both of you. The most important thing is to discuss your mutual expectations about time and communication at the start of your relationship. Keep in mind that mentoring doesn’t necessarily require large amounts of your time. Even brief phone calls or e-mail exchanges with you can make a big difference to your mentee. The annual meeting also offers a convenient venue for getting together with your mentee over coffee or lunch.

FOR MENTEES

How do I become a Mentee?

If you are a member, click here to enroll as a mentee. You will be instructed to choose your preferences for various demographics and also to complete your member profile.

Who are the Mentors?

Mentors are other members who have volunteered their time to support other members' careers and leadership success.

Can I have more than one Mentor?

We will only match mentees with one Mentor at a time.

How do I find a Mentor?

Once enrolled, a staff member will facilitate a match based on your submission. We will make every effort to ensure a successful match.

How long does it take to be matched?

You should expect to be matched within a couple weeks of submission. Our staff will reach out to confirm when a match has been made.

What if the Mentor isn’t the right “fit” for my needs?

Sometimes, regardless of the information provided, mentors and mentees don’t always "fit."  Staff will check in with mentees to confirm a successful match, but if needed, will offer to rematch.

Where can I meet with my Mentor?

It is up to you and your mentor to decide how, when and where you want to pursue your mentoring relationship. It is likely that most of your communication will occur by phone or electronically. The annual meeting offers a great opportunity to meet in person.

How long does the mentoring relationship last?

We recommend that mentoring relationships be completed by one year. Of course, you are welcome to, and we encourage you to continue connecting beyond that, outside of the program.
