Supervisor of Quality, Training, and Safety for Imaging at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, WA
Having served the past 7 years as a member of an
association board, I would like to bring the knowledge
and expertise that I have gained to the AHRA and to help
propel the organization forward in to a more efficient
entity and increase our capability as the premier provider
of resources for the professional development of current
and future Imaging Leaders
.
Question & Answer
What do you see as the primary role of AHRA’s Board of Directors?
The primary role for any Board is to provide the fiscal and regulatory oversight for an organization. The board is also tasked with designing the strategic framework for the organization. This framework is then passed to the CEO or Executive Director to operationalize.
What makes you an excellent leader?
I always find it difficult to verbalize why I am an excellent leader. Mostly because the word excellent is so subjective. With that said I do focus on using evidence based decision making, collaboration, and delegation in my leadership strategies. I believe in being more proactive rather than reactive and this has served me well over the past 7 years.
How do you define governance? Describe your experience with strategic planning.
Governance has a different meaning to different organizations. For the past 7 years I have served as a board member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) in most capacities. My first 3 years were as House of Delegates Vice-Speaker (1) and Speaker (2). I oversaw the process of document revision to the practice standards and bylaws, the official governing documents of the organization and the profession. Governance provides a mix of oversight and guidance in the organizational affairs to include regulatory compliance, fiscal oversight and in some cases professional scopes of practice. During my tenure I had the pleasure of participating in multiple strategic plan and framework development processes. I use both plan and framework as recently the organization became aware that providing more of a framework for the organization allowed us to remain more fluid and to provide for our membership in a more effective manner rather than following a prescriptive strategic plan.
What was your initial reason for joining AHRA, and why do you choose to continue your membership?
ASRT is my technical home. It is where as a technologist I find meaning to my profession, support for advocacy issues and continual lifetime learning opportunities. The AHRA is my home as a leader. The skills that I learned and honed while serving the ASRT have made me a more effective leader and while the ASRT is my technical home, the AHRA is my home for all things for my development as an effective and efficient Radiology Administrator.
What would you say to a peer who was on the fence about becoming a member?
Membership opens doors that you never knew existed. The possibilities that are created through membership and networking are invaluable.
