Educational Sessions

Developing a Turnkey RSO: Why, When, and How
Speaker: Thomas J. Petrone, PhD, DABR, DABMP
CEO & Chief Medical Physicist
Petrone Associates

A 50-minute presentation that will explore the current-day requirements of the radiation safety function in healthcare. The growth of responsibilities of the modern radiation safety officer is a function of technological and clinical advances, increased awareness, and increased regulation. At the same time, the supply of qualified, ready, and willing candidates for RSO positions is strained by increased clinical duties and other factors. The turnkey RSO program offers a potential model for uniformity, compliance, consistency, efficiency, and accuracy across a wide range of radiological departmental scenarios.

You will learn:
• The historic role of the Radiation Safety Office as well as how that role has changed significantly in recent years
• The challenges presented to the modern RSO
• A concept consisting of adaptable models to satisfy the current responsibilities of the RSO both efficiently and consistently.

CT Dose Optimization: From Concepts to Long-Term Implementation

Speaker: Christopher Smitherman, MS, DABR
Chief Technical Officer & Director of Diagnostic Physics
Petrone Associates

A 50-minute presentation that will explore how to implement a CT dose optimization program for the long-term. We will begin with how you can get started with a CT dose optimization program, then will provide all the needed tools to ensure your program is a success. The technical aspects of protocol construction and how each function can be used to improve radiation dose and image quality will be spelled out so that your team feels comfortable making positive changes based on your data.

You will learn:
• Understand the ways to collect the dose data needed to start a CT Dose Optimization program
• Establish how and who needs to interact with this data consistently to be effective
• Explore the technical aspects of protocol optimization and how they can be used to improve image quality and patient dose
